Cryopexy

Cryopexy is a surgical procedure where intense cold is used to treat several retinal disorders including retinal tears or detachments, neovascularization (the formation of new abnormal blood vessels) and intraocular tumors.  The surgeon applies a cold-burn to the affected area. A metal probe is placed against the eye and cold gas is emitted.  The gas freezes a small area of the retina and the tissues beneath it.  With a retinal tear, the freezing treatment forms a scar that seals the edges of the break.
