Coloboma is a congenital defect in the eye, which often results in loss of vision. During fetal development, the different elements in the eye fail to merge normally.  This imperfection in growth may result in an absence of a portion of the optic nerve head, lens, iris, etc.

The amount of vision loss can severe or mild depending on the size and location of the defect.  Presently, there is no treatment for the impairment caused by coloboma.
